Ok after going back at least 14 pages and not seeing the first thing to do with Gen 13 other than a foil variant that doesn't actually exist I decided that I would just ask in a new thread. What kind of Gen13 does everyone out there have? I've got a couple of the variant #1s in a stack getting ready to send off (I bet if you try hard you can probably guess which ones) and wanted to see what everyone else has. Any 9.9s? 10s? Original art?
My last year at FSU, the LCS was going out of business and having a 60% off sale and i bought all 13 or however many variants they were. For the life of me, i dont have a clue what box i have them in but im sure none of them are 9.9's. Maybe some 9.6's or if i was lucky a 9.8 or 2. I'm pretty sure those are the only Gen13's i have.

Why would you say it doesn't exist? Do you mean it's not "official"...?

Everything, including multiples of the mini, the #1 variants, and all the black signed boxes.....
....as well as the super secret RED box, which contains all 14 issues, all signed by Campbell AND Garner.

Well I know it "exists" because after reading multiple back threads you have two of them right? But they are "homemade" and were never manufactured by the retailers. Still, it's something you have no one else does, right?
Yep, love opening those black boxes, and I have seen one of the Red ones pop up on Ebay. Thought briefly about buying it but decided to spend it elsewhere. Interesting question here....I have been told, and may have even seen one once, that the blank covers included had a few sketched on and inserted in those black boxes. Anyone ever see one? I think I remember seeing a Jim Lee somewhere. It was just a real loose sketch but if that's true I'm surprised all of these things didn't get swiped up and busted just for the chance....
The Black boxes sell on Ebay between 75-125 typically if they sell at all. I rarely see them out of that price range on there at least. It's been a while since I've seen a red so I'm not positive how much it went for.

Back in 1995, when these first came out, I am abolutely positive they sold for $39.95. I was so annoyed that I didn't get one, and remained so for years, because they shot up to $10-$15 EACH shortly after release. Now, granted, the 14 books can be assembled for $40 or less these days, but I made it one of my life's missions to get a box for $40 or thereabouts.
And in the early 2000's, I did.
I now have about 6-7 of them, including the red, and I *think* I paid $50 as the highest price for any of them. All four sigs represented.
I just sent in a holiday 13c (which really should have been 13d) to CGC. It's a pretty dead lock at 9.8.
The hardest books I've found were #11 European, #1 Chromium, and 13c holiday.
Tough, tough books to find.
I have never seen a sketched blank. I'll have to check my boxes. Some of them are still sealed.

I cracked mine the day I bought it way back when. Bagged and boarded everything and have since gotten a Fairchild quick sketch by Campbell on the blank I'm horrible at keeping stuff in the package (except I do still have a pack of football cards in the original wrapper from 1972!)

My problem is that I am kind of obsessed with the stuff from late '92-late'97 when i was out of comics. Generally pilloried as the worst period in comics history, I find myself strangely attracted to bad girl books, chromium and other assorted drek.

Lady Death #1.
I had to physically restrain myself from buying YET ANOTHER Vengeance of Vampirella #1 yesterday for $3.25

You and me both brother. I bought an Evil Ernie CGC 9.0 just because it was the first appearance and I have probably had 10 of those Adam Hughes VoV covers at one time or another,
I have a black one... i think i paid like $50 for it, but that was 5-6 yrs ago. cracked it open the minute i got it. unfortunately i noticed that all of them has a minor ding on the corner. I'll be lucky if they go for 9.2.
since then, i've been trying to collect a graded ones. I do have the #1 mini (which i think jim lee did the cover)
I have never heard of a red box before...does anybody have a picture of them. now i'm curious about it.

The Red box Versions I have purchased have been AP. I have one here # 0331 and unfortunately the other two I had the cover/front jacket is missing (for those who may not own a box set it has three seperate covers, an outer case, inner box and an inner sleeve. With many of these sets the glue dries up and the covers become separated and the folds)
Here are some pictures I just took of some of my sets
Not sure about normal, hard to say considering how rare the Ruby reds are suppose to be. Anyone have a number on print run with the ruby reds? Honestly, I had forgot all about them.
On a side note, got my grades back on a couple of Gen 13 # 1 variants....books not in hand yet but soon I'm sure. Janet Jackson variant only came back 9.2 but the Lingerie version came back 9.6. No 9.8s oh well
If you look at a label for Deathmate Black it says it is the first full appearance of Gen 13. Does that mean that there were appearances of any team members prior to that?

Print run was allegedly 400 but not sanctioned so were supposed to be destroyed. Mine went about 4 years ago on Ebay for $550

So back to this...why else would CGC put that if there wasn't a prior appearance by at least one of them somewhere?

Rainmaker appeared in an issue of Stormwatch prior to the gen 13 app in Deathmate. Lynch may have appeared in something else prior to that too, but i could be imagining that.
Hmmm that's interesting. So CGC sees Rainmaker's first appearance in Stormwatch #8 as a prequel to the team appearance even though Rainmaker was not a member of the original team...

well considering the Janet cvr came just under $200 and the lingerie cvr just under $120, i think just between those two, he'll probably just break even or maybe just make a small profit.
I got the Grundge spidey cvr just under $45, plus the rest was just over $55 (i would know, i bid on atleast 4 or 5 of them) So i think he's doing just fine
PLUS, i think this was his third set of Gen 13 SS. the previous set sold way more than the 3rd set did.

I don't determine for other people what is "just fine" for them or not. The seller may have been happy with "just breaking even" or he may not. I DO know this: when sellers can't make money, they will stop doing whatever it is they are doing, and the supply dries up.
As a seller, I will sooner burn an SS book before giving it away for $22.
And I'll still take the "better book premiums."

you are correct this is my third and final set of gen 13 signature series books. This was the highest grade in that as well as the only time I offered a chrome signature series number 1. Although it did come in lower than my last 2 sets I'm still pretty happy with the marginal profit I made in the long run. The were couple good deals that were made I'm happy to start or continue a a collectorsignature series addiction

As they say you win some you lose some. But in the long run in the attention those books got by the number of watchers Definitely increased bids on some of the other book I had for sale . No slabs were hurt or burnt in the Listing and subsequent selling of these books

More power to you man..... and continue on producing the SS addiction....... hey somebody gotta be a supplier for us (or is that called pusher in the drug world)
I think these might be the comics that came with the dolls. I think I might have one of them raw in my collection. Pretty good price if you are a completionist!
not to offend anybody but....are these the knock off cvr, i've been hearing about???
There are 6 of those, and they all reprint Gen 13 #1, the mini series from 1994.
They also reprint various old covers, including Gen 13 #13A, #6, #25, etc.
So why is CGC calling them "#nn"?? can't they just say on the title "reprint #1 mini" or something like that???
The books themselves have no number, either on the cover, or in the indicia. When books have no number (ex: Killing Joke), they get the "#nn" designation.
The label does state that it's a reprint of the #1 mini.

As the owner of these items I will clear a few things up.
1. The label does indicate "Reprints Gen 13 Limited Series #1". It is listed in the auction as such.
2. The Chromium "Special Editions" were originally only available packed with the 12" Fairchild & Lynch action figures (Series 1). The 12" Fairchild & Lynch figures were Diamond Comics Preview Exclusives. (Limited to ?) These figures were not mass produced.
3. The artwork has be censored (painted black) in numerous spots reducing both T&A and blood.

So is anyone else noticing the lack of the box sets these days? I looked through Ebay the other day and only found 3, 2 Jim Lee and 1 Mike Choi. Haven't seen a red box available in a long time either....
I dunno, seem like as few as three years ago you could log on to ebay and depending on how you searched you could find about 3 of each edition at any time. I managed to find one that I didn't have so I have a Choi on the way now
Opened a Brandon Choi box that I got in the mail this evening. All the books look awesome except for two the paper doll cover and the create your own cover both have printer marks which seem to have been pretty common. Think I'll send in the Gen-et Jackson for grading....

That very reason is why I went ahead and picked up a black box of #1's with the chromium signed by Choi. I have never seen him listed at anything!
and speaking of that box, I now have a couple of 9.8 #1's back. Sent in the Jen-et Jackson and the Lin-gen-re covers and they came back nice.
So who's reading Superboy? Caitlin has been introduced and Grunge is coming in April from what I've seen. Any excitement about "the 13" showing up in DC?

Way back in the day - I was pretty stoked with this new Image book coming out, because it was the same name as my comic shop (Gen X Comics). Needless to say, I was kinda bummed when they changed the name to Gen 13 - but I warmed up to it. JSC became one of my favorite artists.
My favorite Gen 13 book (despite him not doing the cover)
I've got my other unsigned one at CGC now, hoping for a sweet grade.

Nice GEN X piece... was it featured on the back cover ad of an Image comic book? If so, which one? I saw a similar cover for Image's free promotional reader "Image Inside" I think it was called that promoted Gen X, but never saw the comic book you posted, so would appreciate it if you could let me know where it came from and appears. Thanks!

The Deathmate Black is considered the first appearance of Gen 13 as a team. Caitlin played more of a major role than the rest of the team but the others (except Rainmaker) were there. However, I'm starting to wonder if the purple ashcans that are dated 1993 came before Deathmate Black and are the true first appearance.

The ad was in Stormwatch #2, inside - I believe. What I have is a promo poster that I got with my Diamond order when I had my shop back in the 90's. It's just an 11x17" poster, I'm sure they're out there - although I've never seen another one.

yeah that was a nice trip to help you get the collection
As soon as I saw this board, I had to join in the conversation!
Pretty much the one series I really got into into from the first issue was Gen 13.
Over e years, I have been very lucky, and even got the following:
- the special chromium #1 from the boxset, signed by Campbell - a do-it-yourself cover that Jim Lee signed and drew Fairchild on at Sdcc 1996 - a do-it-yourself cover that Campbell signed and drew Fairchild on at C2E2 2010 (I told him I'd been waiting 15 years for that moment!) - a #11 European Tour edition signed by all 4 guys (Lee, Choi and Garner at Sdcc in 1996, and then signed by Campbell at c2e2 in 2010) -1a & 1b that I got signed by Campbell and Garner at Sdcc 1995 (waited in a 2 hr line for those) -1J signed by Campbell (notice a Fairchild pattern yet with me?) -8 through 17 signed by Garner and Choi (I plopped those down in front of them at Sdcc 1996)
Btw, someone had questions about a hardcover collection of the original mini-series. There was a release, but I believe it was under 1000 copies print-run. I ordered a used copy from a seller online in the last few days, and can't wait to finally get this.
Btw, once I get the chance, I'll post up some scans of my collection to prove what I have.
On a final note, I got the last Holofoil variant cover chase card from the first Wildstorm Archives set today, and bought a clean doityourself for $6 from a local comic shop. I was hoping to ask Alex Garner to draw on it at this year's C2E2, but he cancelled his upcoming appearance. It's my dream to have an interpretation of Caitlin Fairchild drawn by Lee, Campbell, and Garner (if I could find Brandon Choi and just get him to sign a DIY cover, I'd be fine with that too).
I swear, this last week I'm the guy struggling to regain his youth.
1: I completed the Holofoil chase cards from Wildstorm Archives 1 that had 11 of the 13 variant covers (just took 17 years to complete!)
2 : I completed the chase cards from Wildstorm Archives 2 that had the Whilce Portacio art (just took me 16 years to complete)
And
3 : after 18 years, I finally obtained the hardcover collection of the Gen 13 miniseries, still sealed, and #0756 out of only 1000 (there's a card signed by Campbell inside, but I'm not sure I should break the seal. I also have an unopened copy of Wizard Magazine that had the G13 girls on the cover).
Plus, I noticed noone's done a blog piece on the variant covers, so I'm planning that post, along with full-image scans and more.
That sounds like a steal to me. I recall my local comic store owner in Iowa back in 1995, saying it was going for around $500 at the time it came out (not sure where he heard it from, though).
Btw, I was cleaning out my storage space as I am planning to move to a new apt in less than a week, and after perusing over my Gen 13 collection, was amazed how much I had gotten signed at SDCC in 1996 and 1997. Here's an updated list:
1996 SDCC (Signed by Brandon Choi and Alex Garner): Gen 13 #5 (mini-series) Gen 13 #0 Gen 13 #7 Gen 13 #9 Gen 13 #10 Gen 13 #11 Gen 13 #11 (European Tour Edition) Wetworks #2 (Variant Cover)
1997 SDCC (signed by Wildstorm FX colorists Martin Jimenez & Joe Chiodo): Gen 13 #17 Gen 13 #18 Gen 13 #19 Gen 13 #20 (yeah, they just did colors, but these guy were using light/dark gradient color work that was blowing my teenage mind!).
Previously, I had mentioned that I had a couple covers drawn on by Jim Lee and J Scott Campbell. Well, I made that part of my entertainment blog's post about the Gen 13 Variant Covers:

Would love to see the DIY covers with sketches - I really like seeing his older work. I picked this vintage piece up a few weeks ago and am real happy with it:

I'm bumping this for the sake of bumping an awesome thread. Special thanks to Chuck Grower for getting me my Gen 13 limited series #1 signed - now I just need #2 and #5 for the lock!
