Good advice so far. In reference to coin lots remember the term 'unsearched' means picked clean of anything of value and bid accordingly. The only unsearched coins come in mint wrappers. Grandma's attic and 55 gallon drums of buried coins don't exist.

Here's an ebay anecdote from TBH. I recently bought a "NEW" 750 volt Tripp lite UPS on ebay. $20.50 + $23.95 shipping. It came the other day, I plugged it in and it was DOA. The first thing I did was call Tripp Lite. After reading them the serial number, the customer service/technician told me that the unit was made in 2007 and that most likely the battery was fully discharged and dead. . He also said that the switch or the board might be bad, Sadly, the item was "Old" "New" stock and not covered under warranty. .
Meanwhile, I contacted the seller from ebay, told him the unit was DOA and what the tech at Tripp Lite had told me and he immediately refunded the full amount, which included shipping
This morning I realized that one of my other UPS batteries might fit this unit, so I checked and sure enough, my other Tripp Lite had the same battery. I tried it in the DOA unit and it worked, so I just ordered one for twenty three bucks from amazon and I will now have a working unit. Kind of a hassle, but it looks like it worked out.

1. If it seems too good to be true...it most certainly is... 2. Read the negative feedback...and zero in on any comments about selling overgraded or misrepresented merchandise. Read the neutrals as well. 3. Don't bid at or above accepted market price...unless you can't get to an honest dealer and really put hands on merchandise. Patience...a better deal will eventually come along. 4. Pictures and return policy required.
In general, rule #1 ("if it seem too good to be true, it most certainly is") is correct about 99.9% of the time. On very rare occasions it does not apply, but you have to be not only lucky, but experienced enough in your area of collecting to recognize those occasions.
A couple of months ago in the early afternoon of a weekday I went on eBay and saw a copy of the rare Famous Monsters of Filmland #4, Ghoul's Eye Sticker variant on a Buy-It-Now for $149! At first I hesitated and couldn't believe my eyes. The first thought was that it was a scam and something was wrong. Then I quickly checked the seller's 100% positive feedback and noticed that he had never sold comics or magazines before.
The auction had only been up about 20-30 minutes and only 4 or 5 potential buyers besides myself had viewed it. I didn't think any further and just started clicking on Buy It Now and Commit to Buy realizing that this treasure could disappear instantly if some other astute FM collector stumbled across it and was faster than me.
Later, after corresponding with the seller prior to and after my purchase was received, I learned that he had inherited a collection of monster mags from a friend who passed away and had no knowledge of collecting Famous Monsters. Granted, initially I was still taking a gamble shelling out $149 for a magazine that in its present condition has a catalogue value of around $2,500. However, it was a calculated risk based on the seller's high feedback score and the fact that there was no indication that he ever sold comics or magazines.
Of course, if I wasn't lucky enough to have come upon his auction almost right after it opened all the above would have been moot.
Sometimes, albeit rarely, it is too good to be true!!!
Mike

This is a thread to provide GENERAL information about how to tell a good seller from a potentially fraudulent one on ebay. Tips and tricks to know who's working the system and who's honest.
I will lock this thread to the top for easy reference.
Please, no references to SPECIFIC SELLERS. If you want to talk about that on your own threads, go ahead, but since this will be a preserved reference thread, I would like to keep it general.
Thanks, Arch I yet to have any issue with any seller on Ebay buying coins even those sellers with bad pictures I took a chance on. With Ebay's protection there is little chance you are going to get cheated or something buying coins. Most people will do the right thing even if they are reluctant to do so just to keep their Ebay compliance rating and feedback ranking high. I can't say the same at other similar sites. I encountered one seller who seemed to hide their lot of Indian heads that were all low grade and very harshly cleaned using a bad picture. When I wanted a refund, I was told "you only paid this much, what did you expect". I expected non-damaged coins. They went back and I got a refund.

I have not really bought anything in ebay yet, but I have tried with other sites. I usually check on the comments about the seller to make sure the he/she has good reputation.
