This is my first post so forgive me if I talk about common knowledge.

In the coin collecting world prices of coins are generally based on how many were minted. Almost every coin known has it's mintage printed somewhere. Now with comics how many of a given comic was printed seems hardly an issue. Yes I know about pre-pack comics are a low print run or comics with price variants are rare but other then that everything seems to be based on what the comics about, like 1st appearances etc etc. CGC has obviously helped as far as knowing how rare older comics are in certain grades by checking it's 10 year old census. So to finally get to my point: has does one find out how many of a certain comic was printed? Is their like a print-run website or a book that offers info like coin books do?

Thanks Count that's an excellent site. I'm after information on comics from the 1970's specifically Gold Key. In time I'm sure they will have that information.

We do have 1970s data through Statements of Ownership that will be posted -- click the link on the lower right of my site to the Standard Catalog of Comic Books book if you want to grab what I had a few years ago, since I published everything there.

But Gold Key will be a problem since they were pretty much done selling subscriptions by then -- the later you go, there are very few Statements for Gold Keys. Which is a shame, because it would be interesting to know what percentage of the run was in Whitman bags. The only real place for that data, now that Western is closed, is the Audit Bureau of Circulation, presuming they were audited.

That's basically because the contents or other reasons to want the comic usually dwarf the scarcity aspect, especially post-1965. Amazing Spider-Man might have a very high print run, but everyone wants it. An unpopular book from the late 70s (if Marvel or DC) always has way more copies than demand, even if it was a relatively tiny print run.

Gold Keys are kind of a special case--the newsstand ones can seem difficult to get more because the lower demand/low value means most won't bother listing them even if every dealer has a box or two.

It's a fun publisher and the hunt for the prepacks etc. is a cool niche.
