The CGC folks are allowed to give a book like this the Blue Label w/notation. It's mostly in the books age though. A certain date and before are allowed very minor forms of CT, Glue, etc....

IMO, the Pocket Comics #4 is not a Hitler cover. Neither one of the guys looks like Hitler. One guy appears to have a mustache but when you see a large scan it, it is actually a shadow from his nose, and not a mustache. And I think Speed #16 (listed on your sig line) and Pocket #4 are Hitler covers. The Speed Comics #16 may be a Hitler cover. I had rejected it in the past due to how the drawing of the character looks. You rarely see Hitler wearing a helmet & a regular soldier's uniform. It very well could be Hitler though. Any thoughts? IMO, the Pocket Comics #4 is not a Hitler cover. Neither one of the guys looks like Hitler. One guy appears to have a mustache but when you see a large scan it, it is actually a shadow from his nose, and not a mustache. West You're probably right. I've always thought of Speed #16 as a Hitler cover (leading a pack of ghouls, ceremonial sword, etc.) and just assumed the guy in the back on Pocket #4 was Hitler because he is rendered so much like the guy on Speed #16. Could be that neither is Hitler. One that I am not sure is Hitler is Zip #26. Mussolini, yes, Tojo, maybe, but not Hirohito, who is almost always depicted with glasses. Could just as easily be a generic Japanese officer, though. The German? Well, here's a closeup scan of the guy. Pretty plain uniform for Hitler. Is that a really small mustache? Or just a shadow? I'm just not sure, but I'll defer to the experts.

Hopefully I will be posting a nice Timely sometime in June. I always hear that warning about GA is more addictive than any other era and I hope I don't put us totally into the poor house.

I could use a tabloid version if anyone has one. It is probably reprinted in the Sunday Classics with the 1945 strips. I only have the volume which reprints from 1939-1943. That edition has the giant robot story but I alsohave the tabloid originals with that story. It is one of my favorites and I really like the Action 36 cover but the story is not in there. I would not venture in such schematizations. And history books can be pretty misleading, since they tend to look more often just at external facts, than to the person. In fact, this kind of research presents itself to me (I am italian) as a fascinating quest in history, since it can be done from all angles, and through the privileged means of comics' fiction. Problem is Germany did not have a comics tradition, and Japan matured its own "more modern" approach after the war. Recently we have had a landmark study on the subject of fascist policy vs. the comics medium, conducted by some friends of mine. The book, of course, is in italian, and focuses on the syndicated strips production (which were the ones started, with Flash Gordon, to be published in large comics "newspapers" in the early 1930s (Superman made his debut on the pages on one of these)). The book is titled "Eccetto Topolino" (Except Mickey Mouse), a title which refers to a supposed clearance Mussolini gave to the Walt Disney productions (his sons read comics), and to the general indulgence with which Disney and humor comics were tolerated as the MinCulPop (Ministry for the Popular Culture, a fascist institution) up to 1943. After that, the only publication which almost did not cease publication due to those restrictions applied to American comics was "Il Vittorioso", a weekly tabloid which published comics entirely written & drawn in Italy. Here we had, among the many features, "Romano il legionario", a more patriotic than actually fascist hero which could be seen as a sort of italian counter-part to your Air-fighter comics genre (Blackhawk, Airboy, etc.). A lot more realistic, too, he was created by Kurt Caesar, which had singular positions towards nazist Germany and the alliance. "Eccetto Topolino" studies all the story, up to the "liberation" of comics, and the restoration of the balloons (the use of balloons was prohibited by MinCulPop), up to the end of the war. Compared to some of their competitors, Timely covers were "war centric," so it's not a surprise that they weren't shy about using Hitler's image. Captain America had Hitler on the first two issues of its run. Cover appearances on Marvel Mystery, Miss Fury, Mystic, USA, Young Allies, etc. would seem to indicate that Hitler sold comics. Everyone from SuperSnipe to Super Duck to Super Rabbit was walloping Hitler. Catman featured 4 Hitler covers in its first 20 issues. Even funny animals took swipes at him. For some reason, across all their titles and lengthy runs, D.C. had Hitler on only 7 of their covers. Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman took their shots. But many of the heroes in the D.C. stables, like Green Lantern, Flash, Spectre and others, never went after Uncle Adolf. Here's Wonder Woman's swipe at Hitler:

The Boy Commandos have a Mussolini story on Detective #79, of which I hope to find a cheap low grade copy some day. $\:\)$
