West - that is great list for reference.

Are you sure about Catman #13? Maybe with the volumes and numbering this may not be the one you are referencing. Here is mine but no Hitler:

Picked this up from Metro a fews years back---a grail book for me. Metro gave it a VG+, CGC gave it a VG-. I think it's solidly in the middle (the frayed spine looks much worse in the scan). This is in a slab these days, but this raw scan looks purtier.

Finally got this one. After searching for a good decade and finding only some copies in bound volumes THREE copies become available the same week. I thought this one was the most desirable of them and I'm just giddy to finally get it.

The books age and the fact that the CT is very minor. The CGC folks are allowed to give a book like this the Blue Label w/notation. It's mostly in the books age though. A certain date and before are allowed very minor forms of CT, Glue, etc....

I forgot about Speed 16. It's generally accepted as a Hitler cover, and I can't argue that it's not. I think he has the uniform because he's leading the monsters into battle.

But Pocket 4 isn't Hitler.

And beyond that, it looks like they downgraded it, as that's a phenomenal looking 8.0, more likely higher grade if not for the ct note. Mr. BedRick could probably attest.

Sweet copy.

Sweet copy.

It was purchased via a Heritage auction in 2007 or so as a PLOD 8.5. It had a very small amount of professional color touch in the feather line on the spine. Holder cracked, color removed (mostly, the very small amount that is left is not hiding any blemish so no apparent improvement), resubmitted, viola - universal 8.0.

And before anyone asks - the resto was removed for purely aesthetic reasons. Probably the same reason it was applied in the first place. But now the market is such that the visual appeal of a Pennsylvania Daredevil #1 in an 8.0 blue holder is so much higher than a Pennsylvania Daredevil #1 in an 8.5 purple holder.

You're probably right. I've always thought of Speed #16 as a Hitler cover (leading a pack of ghouls, ceremonial sword, etc.) and just assumed the guy in the back on Pocket #4 was Hitler because he is rendered so much like the guy on Speed #16. Could be that neither is Hitler.

One that I am not sure is Hitler is Zip #26. Mussolini, yes, Tojo, maybe, but not Hirohito, who is almost always depicted with glasses. Could just as easily be a generic Japanese officer, though.

The German? Well, here's a closeup scan of the guy. Pretty plain uniform for Hitler. Is that a really small mustache? Or just a shadow? I'm just not sure, but I'll defer to the experts.

The Hitler covers are amazing. I'm also looking for Axis cover comics. Does anybody have a list and pictures of the unique Axis covers. \(thumbs u

2/3 of the Axis seen on this cover...could Hirohito possibly be the buck-toothed mouse with glasses? hm

Some of the covers that depict all three members of the Axis have already been posted, like the Young Allies #9, the Boy Comics, the Big Shots, and the Famous Funnies #102. Here's a few that haven't been posted yet.

In corresponding with someone about Axis covers, it dawned on me that I can't recollect any covers depicting the third member of the Axis, Italy. Aside from covers with Mussolini, are there any covers that show Italian troops getting smashed by some hero/heroes?

During WWII, the Italians despised the Duce. Italian military at the time was a second class military and was suffering defeat after defeat. Read a little WWII history and you'll find out why \(thumbs u

Thank you Richard and Joe. \(worship\)

I'm receiving a few small inheritances this year from some
land my Grandmother and her Sister were kicked off back
in 1918 and was really hoping to finally buy a GA book later
this year and then I seen this one and fell in love.

Hopefully I will be posting a nice Timely sometime in June.

I always hear that warning about GA is more addictive than
any other era and I hope I don't put us totally into the poor
house.

it's a great book fay---well done. starting with a hitler cover, maybe you can specialize in those as you add to the g.a. collection. plenty of 'em, timely's included.

Just picked this up, though not in hand. Can't wait to flip through it.

Goebbels Goering and Hitler cover. About as classic as it gets.

this is a rare pulp. It's a Fawcett file copy. When my friends and I got that warehouse we found 5 copies. It had never been seen before
since I have seen a copy that did not originate with the Fawcett deal

I need this, now! Which super man issue is that? \(worship\)

That's a Sunday page from 1945. I have a third which has been trimmed from the Sunday funnies. I could use a tabloid version if anyone has one. It is probably reprinted in the Sunday Classics with the 1945 strips. I only have the volume which reprints from 1939-1943. That edition has the giant robot story but I alsohave the tabloid originals with that story. It is one of my favorites and I really like the Action 36 cover but the story is not in there. I don't think the Hitler story went very far but I have never seen the finish.

Amazing cover. What an image - the nazi soldier being grated like cheese by the steamroller. Propaganda in pre-politically correct times. Nothing like it!

My only Hitler depiction cover, but it's a great one (S&K on steroids). The not-so-subtle symbolism of Pandora's box vis-a-vis Hitler's "Trunk of Terror" is perfect.

I was too entranced by the fine composition of the picture to notice them. That must have been one really talented photographer.

This one isn't an Axis cover, but it is war themed. I'm glad whoever owned this one originally didn't follow the cover's advice and send it to a paper drive.

Bumped this up from earlier in the thread. The more I look at this, the less I think it is Hitler.

The German? Well, here's a closeup scan of the guy. Pretty plain uniform for Hitler. Is that a really small mustache? Or just a shadow? I'm just not sure, but I'll defer to the experts.

we discussed this at great detail in chicago last year... not hitler, but certainly the imagery is there to be left to one's imagination

I had never noticed it was a Hitler cover until you brought it to SD Con last year. It's quite nifty and, no doubt, that's the best copy!

Great thread, helps a lot with the research I found myself fascinated by… \:\)

 Quote:
During WWII, the Italians despised the Duce. Italian military at the time was a second class military and was suffering defeat after defeat. Read a little WWII history and you'll find out why

Hmm… It’s not so linear. I would not venture in such schematizations. And history books can be pretty misleading, since they tend to look more often just at external facts, than to the person.
In fact, this kind of research presents itself to me (I am italian) as a fascinating quest in history, since it can be done from all angles, and through the privileged means of comics' fiction. Problem is Germany did not have a comics tradition, and Japan matured its own "more modern" approach after the war.

Recently we have had a landmark study on the subject of fascist policy vs. the comics medium, conducted by some friends of mine. The book, of course, is in italian, and focuses on the syndicated strips production (which were the ones started, with Flash Gordon, to be published in large comics "newspapers" in the early 1930s (Superman made his debut on the pages on one of these)).
The book is titled "Eccetto Topolino" (Except Mickey Mouse), a title which refers to a supposed clearance Mussolini gave to the Walt Disney productions (his sons read comics), and to the general indulgence with which Disney and humor comics were tolerated as the MinCulPop (Ministry for the Popular Culture, a fascist institution) up to 1943. After that, the only publication which almost did not cease publication due to those restrictions applied to American comics was "Il Vittorioso", a weekly tabloid which published comics entirely written & drawn in Italy.
Here we had, among the many features, "Romano il legionario", a more patriotic than actually fascist hero which could be seen as a sort of italian counter-part to your Air-fighter comics genre (Blackhawk, Airboy, etc.). A lot more realistic, too, he was created by Kurt Caesar, which had singular positions towards nazist Germany and the alliance.

"Eccetto Topolino" studies all the story, up to the "liberation" of comics, and the restoration of the balloons (the use of balloons was prohibited by MinCulPop), up to the end of the war.

Here's the cover:

Hitler sure got around. He had enough time to get his *spoon* kicked by about every super hero on the planet. He even got his butt kicked on the football field.

Hitler’s opponent looks like Doctor Strange dressed up in a traditional bavarian costume.

I've got a VG Great Comics #3 (Hitler in Hell cover), but I'd need to dig it up to do a scan.

I love the look on the face of the demon who's got his arm wrapped around Hitler's thigh.

Now there's a sentence I didn't expect to write today!

I had a great time at the Wizard Chicago con. This show was pretty big and there were tons of comic dealers.

I was able to get this cool comic from Al Stoltz of Basement Comics, who always has some unusual comic I need.

Having your heroes taking on the biggest villain in the world would seem to be a surefire way to boost sales and many publishers featured Hitler on their covers with regularity. .

Compared to some of their competitors, Timely covers were "war centric," so it's not a surprise that they weren't shy about using Hitler's image. Captain America had Hitler on the first two issues of its run. Cover appearances on Marvel Mystery, Miss Fury, Mystic, USA, Young Allies, etc. would seem to indicate that Hitler sold comics.

Everyone from SuperSnipe to Super Duck to Super Rabbit was walloping Hitler. Catman featured 4 Hitler covers in its first 20 issues. Even funny animals took swipes at him.

For some reason, across all their titles and lengthy runs, D.C. had Hitler on only 7 of their covers. Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman took their shots. But many of the heroes in the D.C. stables, like Green Lantern, Flash, Spectre and others, never went after Uncle Adolf.

Here's Wonder Woman's swipe at Hitler:

I know for sure there is at least a Wonder Woman story featuring Mussolini (maybe more than one), but don’t know which one. The Boy Commandos have a Mussolini story on Detective #79, of which I hope to find a cheap low grade copy some day. \:\)
