I noticed Allen Ulmer was given credit for this Blue Beetle art but it looks like Quinlan to me. Anyone else think so? There were a lot of Blue Beetle artists and it is easy to be confused.

STONER, ELMER CECIL [1897-1969] (artist) African-American

ECS

Not my favorite artist but one of a few black artist to work on Golden Age comics.

He drew this splash and it looks like he did the cover for BB 32. He is also credited with creating Mr. Peanut. Mr. P is a big collectible item in case you didn't know.

E. C. Stoner was an African-American artist, who attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and was the protege of philantropist F. M. Kirby. Stoner did poster art during World War I and was art director at Tower Magazines in the 1930s. During the War he was commissioned to do portraits of the first black colonels in the US army. He worked as a comic book artist through the Binder, Chesler and Iger Studios from the late 1930s throughout the 1940s. He drew the first story of National's 'Speed Saunders' and was present in Dell titles like The Funnies with features like 'Martan the Marvel Man', 'Phantasmo', 'Night Devils and 'Convoy'.

He drew 'Blackstone' for EC Comics, 'Captain Marvel', 'Lance O'Casey' and 'Spy Smasher' for Fawcett, 'Blue Beetle' and 'Bouncer' for Fox, 'Breeze Barton' and 'Flexo' for Timely, 'Doc Savage' and 'Iron Munro' for Street & Smits, as well as 'Mr. Ree' for Rural Home. In 1951, he illustrated the syndicated feature 'Rick Kane, Space Marshall'.

Stoner's art and his background reminds me of Pippin's. Horace Pippin started painting after serving in WWI and losing an arm.

His style was considered surrealistic. Or ethnic American folk art.

I have a copy of one of his paintings over the fireplace where I live in Orange County.

Strangely enough, Horace grew up in Orange County and moved to West Chester, PA, where I lived for over 20 years.

I didn't hear as much about him as I did Andrew Wyeth.

There are still a lot of red fox in Orange County but they no longer have segregated schools.

And while I am on the subject, there were a few other well known black artists that did comics. Matt Baker, of course, and A. C. Hollingsworth are better known than Stoner but they also seemed to have been key targets for Wertham.

So many unfamiliar (to me) names on that list for Holyoke 1943.

If I had to take a wild guess, I'd say very early Sol Brodsky.

Or Saul Brodsky's little brother -- in a big hurry so he wouldn't show up late for third grade.

Perhaps that was by Sid Lazurus, who did Ali Baba, with Altman. The contorted arm was probably by a different artist from Altman or Stoner. Stoner did those elongated poses and slightly goofy faces for the Bouncer and Phantasmo, as well as, Blue Beetle. I am still trying to figure out which cover or strip was done by Murphy Anderson. Maybe he can give us a hint. I asked him a while back about his first strip and I remember he mentioned a Milkman or farm ad and not Blue Beetle.

Allen Ulmer did some nice work on the Blue Beetle. He also did this nice Ragman splash.

I used to work in a biohazard lab but never got to wear a mask as neat as this one.

I am especially fond of his pen name, Wilmer Muddleshtunk! Was that the name of the gunsel in "The Maltese Falcon"?

Elisha Cook played the role of Wilmer Cook in MF.

He also appeared in Superman and Star Trek.

Amazing range of parts for the little guy.

He was never the star but was always in there banging away at his craft.

Maybe you can track down the party responsible for this mess!

So many unfamiliar (to me) names on that list for Holyoke 1943.

If I had to take a wild guess, I'd say very early Sol Brodsky.

Or Saul Brodsky's little brother -- in a big hurry so he wouldn't show up late for third grade.

Jack

Perhaps that was by Sid Lazurus, who did Ali Baba, with Altman. The contorted arm was probably by a different artist from Altman or Stoner. Stoner did those elongated poses and slightly goofy faces for the Bouncer and Phantasmo, as well as, Blue Beetle. I am still trying to figure out which cover or strip was done by Murphy Anderson. Maybe he can give us a hint. I asked him a while back about his first strip and I remember he mentioned a Milkman or farm ad and not Blue Beetle.

Thanks for the ideas. I can understand why no one is rushing forward to claim credit.

Jack

You can complain about the cover which may be by Brodsky and Lazurus but the interior art looks pretty good.

Crime Report splash looks like Eisner but is attributed to Allen Ulmer.

Ramona did this cover cause it is signed at the bottom.

Ramona did this cover too. She signed her whole last name.

It looks like Japs, knives, bondage and oil cans "Down by the Old Mill Stream".

It's true -- a rare case where the interior artwork is better than the cover.

Here's a story that I scanned last year.

That was a contraction away from being a hilarious post......

Stoner did some interesting work for Popular and The Funnies. I like the Gang Busters cover. The Phantasmo cover reminds me of Fantastic 4 I think.

I think The_Beyonder should collect everything by that artist.

More Ramona data. Her work on that Blue Beetle cover reminds me of the Boy Commandos covers that were done while Jack was in a muddy foxhole.
